We started with one bench and a rule: show people the stone before the ring. Twelve years on, the bench is eleven feet long and the rule hasn’t moved.
Loupe is a workshop first and a shop second. Everything is drawn, cast and set in the room behind the counter, by seven setters who each finish their own rings. You meet yours at the first sitting and they send you the Friday photo.
We buy stones one at a time from four cutters we have visited, and we grade them again by the east window before anything goes on the parcel. If a stone doesn’t look right in daylight, it doesn’t go on the table.

One bench above a cutter’s office on Hatton Wall. First ring: a round solitaire, still worn.

Heirloom remodelling becomes a third of the work. The gold credit scheme starts.
